With the QWC qualifying group stages completed we moved into crucial play-offs and the last chance saloon for some really big Queen songs.

The NDN play-offs gave second place teams the opportunity to make the QWC Finals, but inevitably there were significant casualties along the way. My Melancholy Blues got that sinking feeling, losing out (41-54) to the perennial live favourite Love Of My Life.

Meanwhile, Night At The Opera deep-cut The Prophet’s Song went biblical on You’re My Best Friend (53-42), casting the John Deacon top ten hit into the QWC wilderness.

In the tightest of play-off head-to-heads We Are The Champions triumphed 48-47 over Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy, ensuring the understated and modest Mercury anthem will go on and on, and on, and on into the QWC Finals.

Jazz/Game/Flash

Preliminary play-offs were the order of the day for the JGF runner-up songs. In the first of these Play The Game started slowly but pipped Bicycle Race at the post (50-45). In the second JGF play-off prelim Crazy Little Thing Called Love was cool, relaxed and hip enough to defeat Let Me Entertain You 62-33. Exit stage left for the Jazz rocker…

To secure the final qualifying spot from the JGF group Play The Game and Crazy Little Thing Called Love will now square up on Fri 11 October. On the same day play-offs for the Miracle/Innuendo/MIH group will complete the picture for the QWC finals:
