Week 13 Round-Up - And Another One Gone, Another One Gone...
Fri 20 Sep
One/Two/SHA – Group A
Expected results all round as The Fairy Feller’s Masterstroke presides at the top of OTS Grp A, vanquishing White Queen (As It Began) to 2nd spot in the process (63-31). Meanwhile it’s RIP for Keep Yourself Alive despite a 56-38 win over Bring Back that Leroy Brown.
One/Two/SHA – Group B
The March Of The Black Queen trampled all over In The Lap Of The Gods…Revisited (80-14), confirming respective first and second places in OTS Grp B. Son And Daughter completed the group with a comfortable win over Funny How Love Is (70-24), FHLI finishing fun-free and pointless.
One/Two/SHA – Group C
Killer Queen done alright (80-14 v Doing All Right) and guaranteed top spot in OTS Grp C in the process. Ogre Battle secured runner-up position and lives for (a wee bit) more via a 69-25 win over Father To Son.
One/Two/SHA – Group D
Liar proved to be the real deal beating Nevermore (65-29) to secure the automatic qualifying place in OTS Grp D. Elsewhere, Flick Of The Wrist won hands down (72-22) against The Night Comes Down and grabbed second place in the process.
One/Two/SHA – Group E
Now I’m Here predictably made it five from five wins (81-13 v Modern Times Rock ‘N’ Roll) to top OTS Grp E. Great King Rat shook off the effects of syphilis, looking remarkably healthy in runner-up spot (defeating Misfire 70-15). This result left Lily Of The Valley unable to pass despite defeating old trooper She Makes Me (80-14).
One/Two/SHA – Group F
An insane final set of results in OTS Grp F saw Stone Cold Crazy depose Seven Seas Of Rhye from top spot (54-40) via a vote difference of 10. Brighton Rock defeated Jesus 90-4 (via pier review?) and in doing so sunk SSOR hopes of a qualifier position, vote difference of a mere eight votes being the decider. Elsewhere, also-rans The Loser In The End and Dear Friends finished 54-40 in an inconsequential end of season tussle.
Saturday 21 September
Night/Day/News – Group A
If ever a song was destined to top it’s group surely Bohemian Rhapsody was that song? True to form Bo Rhap defeated another live favourite (Love Of My Life, 72-16) to secure the automatic qualifying place. Despite that reverse LOML was good for a play-off spot despite Tie Your Mother Down triumphing (80-8) over Sweet Lady in an all-female feud.
Night/Day/News – Group B
Needing a win, We Will Rock You was put back into it’s place by It’s Late (58-30). This left the Peaches-inspired masterpiece top of the group, but WWRY lost second spot to The Prophet’s Song – who saw that one coming? Meanwhile cat lovers everywhere suffered a less than perfect (sic?) result as All Dead, All Dead lost out to Long Away (38-50).
Night/Day/News – Group C
With Death On Two Legs confirmed in the automatic qualifying spot (via an 84-4 win over Get Down, Make Love), all eyes were on which Queen cracker would secure the runner-up spot in NDN Grp C. In the end a mere six votes separated We Are The Champions and You Take My Breath Away, with the News Of The World anthem coming through 47-41.
Night/Day/News – Group D
With only order of the top two places to be sorted, Somebody To Love downed My Melancholy Blues (77-11) and qualified automatically as a result, leaving MMB to a second place finish. Meanwhile, NDN Grp D no-hopers finished up their fixtures as I’m In Love With My Car was stalled by 39 (36-52) and Drowse drifted off in last place (27-61 v You And I).
Night/Day/News – Group E
True to form Spread Your Wings topped NDN Grp E via a convincing win over bottom dweller Teo Torriate (72-16). To secure the play-off place You’re My Best Friend only had to avoid defeat against proto-punk paean Sheer Heart Attack, a task completed via a 60-28 win over the Taylor tune.
Night/Day/News – Group F
The Millionaire Waltz cashed in at the top of NDN Grp F (75-13 v White Man) and secured the automatic qualifying place in the process. Elsewhere Good Old-fashioned Lover Boy schmoozed it’s way to runner-up spot (79-9 v Who Needs You) and dashing the feint play-off hopes of Fight From The Inside (despite a 47-41 win over Sleeping On The Sidewalk).
Sun 22 Sep
Jazz/Game/Flash – Group A
Fat Bottomed Girls confirmed top spot in JGF Grp A despite a relatively tight squeeze (45-31) against Rock It (Prime Jive). This result allowed steady-(fr)eddie Crazy Little Thing Called Love to ease into the play-off place, defeating If You Can’t Beat Them 73-3.
Jazz/Game/Flash – Group B
Don’t Stop Me Now had a real good time in JGF Grp B, winning every tie it played, including a final go, go, good win over Dead On Time (58-18). This defeat for Dead On Time proved to be the death knell for May’s mosher as Play The Game opened up on The Hero (60-16) to claim second spot in the group.
Jazz/Game/Flash – Group C
Dragon Attack continued to scorch the opposition, confirming top spot via a 66-10 win over Flash’s Theme. Bicycle Race duly free-wheeled to the play-off place and completing In Only Seven Days’ seemingly weekly whipping (65-11).
Jazz/Game/Flash – Group D
Another One Bites The Dust again laid down the bass-is for a full QWC challenge, knocking out Dreamer’s ball 55-21 and topping JGF Grp D as a result. Sail Away Sweet Sister duly cruised into the play-off place via a 58-18 win over Coming Soon.
Jazz/Game/Flash – Group E
Rounding off the weekend action Save Me proved to be the dove from above, defeating More Of That Jazz (71-5) and topping JGF Grp E. Let Me Entertain You had another son of of a bitch of a time gaining a play-off place by beating Don’t Try Suicide (69-7).
The final round of group games will now be completed over Fri 26 – Sat 27 September, the remaining 80’s and 90’s songs scrambling for places in the Queen World Cup knock-out stages…
Fri 26 Sep
Space/Works/Magic – Group A
Will SWM Grp A go to form and see Radio Ga Ga knock out the immortal Who Wants To Live Forever to claim the only qualifying place?
Space/Works/Magic – Group B
Under Pressure seems to be under very little needing just a draw against Body Language to secure top spot…unless A Kind Of Magic casts a spell in the final group games.
Space/Works/Magic – Group C
I Want To Break Free needs only a draw against Back Chat to top SWM Grp C and dash the feint qualifying hopes of Princes Of The Universe or Man On The Prowl (surely only battling it out for the honour of runner-up spot).
Space/Works/Magic – Group D
Hammer To Fall has all but nailed down the sole qualifying place in SWM Grp D, only Dancer can trip up the frontrunner.
Space/Works/Magic – Group E
SWM Grp E is on a knife edge with One Vision and It’s A Hard Life tied on seven points each, but One Vision is just ahead via +11 vote difference. Both are favourites to pick up final day wins but the relative love for opponents and live staples Tear It Up and Is This The World We Created..? will make all the difference.
Sat 27 Sep
Miracle/Innuendo/MIH – Group A
Innuendo and The Invisible Man have already secured the two available play-off places…which song claims the glory of first place?
Miracle/Innuendo/MIH – Group B
The Show Must Go On is sure of further QWC involvement but which of Let Me Live and Scandal (tied on seven points) will join it? Scandal, despite being behind on vote difference, looks set to claim the headlines as Let Me Live must face the indefatigable TSMGO in it’s final match.
Miracle/Innuendo/MIH – Group C
Breakthru has already claimed one of the two play-off places from MIM Grp C. Headlong currently holds the second coveted spot, but can be overtaken by Mother Love (its opponent in the final group game) or Too Much Love Will Kill You (much less likely as TMLWKY plays Breakthru).
Miracle/Innuendo/MIH – Group D
Was It All Worth It and I Want It All have a final showdown, both safe and secure in the available play-off spots in MIM Grp D…only the glory of top spot is on the line.
Miracle/Innuendo/MIH – Group E
I’m Going Slightly Mad has all but secured the first available play-off place in MIM Grp E, only needing to avoid defeat against the pointless Rain Must Fall. In the remaining tie both A Winter’s Tale and Bijou are capable of deposing I Was Born To Love You for the second play-off spot.
Miracle/Innuendo/MIH – Group F
The final games of the group stages are largely meaningless…These Are The Days Of Our Lives will top the group regardless of the result against It’s A Beautiful Day (Reprise), whilst The Miracle will watch from the sidelines secure in the second play-off place.
